We need your help. (A message from TGPL’s Treasurer)

Trashi Ge Phel Ling Buddhist Centre is urgently looking for a new gompa
space.  Can you help?
We have been very fortunate to enjoy a small but
dedicated space which could be opened into a larger space when needed.

Now we must find a new Wellington venue, preferably in
Island Bay, central Wellington or in the northern suburbs.

We need a space where students can meet for regular practice once a week, ideally wednesdays,
and for sessions with Geshe Dhonam.  Geshe-la comes to Wellington every
two months for a weekend of dharma teachings.  The space needs to be big
enough for our small but dedicated group of about a dozen students.
However, a larger space would also be marvellous.  Students need access to
a toilet.  Tea-making facilities would be an added bonus.  We are also
interested in joining with other compatible groups to share an affordable
rental space.   Please can you consider this request seriously and talk
with anyone you know who could help.  Word-of-mouth has always been our
best resource!  Contact Paul (04 977 5696), Pam (04 232 9896) or Sherryn
(04 233 2049) or reply to this e-mail.

Currently we have very little money and will also need to fund airfares
for lama and the translator, at the start of the 2011 year.  We need to
build funds for this as quickly as possible.  Donations of any amount
would be greatly appreciated.  Each visit costs the Trust around $735 in total.
This can be broken down into visit costs us $735 to host.  (Airfares $400,
Lama offering $130, Translator koha $125, Food $60, Power $20).

We rely upon donations and amounts over $5 can be receipted for
tax rebate.  Your help is vital.

Thank you.

His Holiness to celebrate his 75th Birthday

On the 6th of July, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will turn 75. And we think this is something worth celebrating :)

Trashi Ge Phel Ling members (and this means you too) have been invited to a small gathering to sit, eat, watch a movie, and generally be merry and glad that we have such an incredible man of peace still with us in this world.

The movie, The Cup, seems suitably themed and timed for more than one concurring circumstance:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cup
http://www.amazon.com/The-Cup/dp/B00030KT62

Come along around 6.30pm to get comfy, and we will kick off the movie and food around 7.00pm

If you think you might be joining, then please email us at tgpl.wellington@gmail.com. This means we will be able to sort out  suitable seating.  There’ll be a big pot of vegi-something, and any other additions would of course be warmly welcome.

The address is 53 Edinburgh Terrace, Berhampore. (Although there is the slight chance that this may change, so please double check closer to the date)

If you find our website or centre useful, please give us a donation. And please ‘Contact’ us, we’re a friendly bunch!

Earthquake in Tibet

Please click on the above link to watch His Holiness speak on the recent event.

‘On April 14th, a huge earthquake struck Yushu County. Yushu is a predominately Tibetan area on the border of Qinghai, Sichuan and the Tibetan Autonomous Region.  Ninety percent of the buildings have collapsed and there are massive casualties and injuries.  Many residents fled with just the clothes they were wearing and have lost everything.  The weather in Yushu is cold and windy – overnight temperatures are around -5°C in April.  The urgent humanitarian need is enormous.’

Although the news here in New Zealand has been reporting this as the China earthquake, it was actually in a part of Tibet where most of the population is Tibetan. For international news stories and clips that explain what is going on there in a bit more detail please click either of the following:

·         http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/18/world/asia/18quake.html?pagewanted=1

·         http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8627206.stm

·         http://www.phayul.com/

The area is largely closed to foreigners as is a usual response by the Chinese Government regarding incidents in Tibet. Offers of assistance from Russia, Taiwan, the UN, the US, and India have all been turned down apparently by the Chinese government.

People have reported that the monks have been doing a lot of the rescue work. The death toll has apparently reached 2000 and could be as high as 10,000, although there is question about the accuracy of this because many bodies are being taken to monasteries apparently rather than hospitals and because of possible political reasons. More than 12000 are injured. The Dalai Lama has stated that he wants to be allowed to go to the area but no word from the Chinese Government has been made public that we are aware of.

You can help Tibetans in this difficult time. The easiest way at this time is to donate money. Even small amounts make a large difference in this part of the world where most people are very poor.

If you want to donate online directly, you may like to consider the Tibetan Village Project. Through our network of relationships we are aware that this group is physically in the area, is made up of at least some Tibetan people and works directly with Tibetans.  We trust the people that personally know the group. You can donate to them by credit card or paypal here: http://www.tibetanvillageproject.org/

The other groups being endorsed by various parts of the larger Tibetan focused community are:

Yushu Earthquake Response  – a coalition of local grassroots NGOs from Qinghai – including Snowland Service Group, Tsongkha Charitable Association, Sanchuan Development Association, Friend of Rural Community Development, Shem Women’s Group, and the Pentok Institute: http://www.yushuearthquakeresponse.org/

and

International Campaign for Tibet: https://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/6063/shop/custom.jsp?donate_page_KEY=3457

If donating money is not your thing, but you feel moved to help, you may like to do as the Tibetans often do and offer up thoughts, wishes or prayers for those who have died and those who remain in whatever way you see fit. A common Tibetan prayer or mantra of compassion for all living beings is ‘Om mani padme hum’.
